We're Going to Paint a Bear Hunt...

Exploring 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen with a multimedia painting playtime!

We're Going on a Bear Hunt Painting Activity

I love 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' - I think it's one of those perfect combinations of repetition, poetry and excitement for all kids to love. Plus it lends itself to turning into playtimes so well (you might remember our Going on a Bear Hunt Messy Playtime from a while back).

This time I thought we'd turn it into a painting activity, using a different technique/medium for each part of the story. I made a 'swishy swashy' grass paintbrush using grass and seedpods tied to a popsicle stick. We had leaves to make prints of the 'big dark forest', brown paint mixed with pva glue to make 'squelchy squerchy' mud, watercolour paints for deep cold river, shaving foam mixed with pva to make snow paint (you might remember our cloud paintings using the same recipe) and scrunched up newspaper balls to paint our 'narrow gloomy cave'...

...I also made a bottle cap stamp bear footprint - like these DIY Foam Stamps we made a while back

The kiddos had a lot of fun exploring all the different techniques - I just whipped out a fresh sheet of paper each time they wanted to change styles!

Once our creations were dry I labelled each page and hung them up on the bedroom door...

I made mini versions of each painting on index cards to put together in a little homemade book...

So much fun to explore one of our favourite stories using one of our favourite ways to play! What book would you choose?
