Glow in the Dark Slime

GLOW IN THE DARK SLIME

This week we finally (read - mama mustered up the courage) got our hands stuck into some slime (aka gak, flubber, oobleck). Pretty much everyone has played with this stuff it seems and we are the last on this bandwagon - but if you've not heard of it before it is a non-Newtonian substance - it is a liquid until force is applied at which point it becomes a solid. So you have a tray of what looks like paint, but when you run your fingers through it suddenly it becomes solid, as soon as you stop moving it returns to it's liquid form!

GLOW IN THE DARK OOBLECK

The basic recipe is 1 cup water to 1.5/2 cups cornflour - then mix and mix and mix - it gets harder to mix as the mixture starts getting hard as you drag your spoon through it! Of course, I say basic recipe... I did some experimenting and chucked in some glow in the dark paint and some stars to hunt for.

GLOW IN THE DARK FLUBBER

I used the same paint I used in our Glow in the Dark Playdough but I guess I should have added it before I spent ten minutes mixing the mixture... it was soo hard to get the paint distributed as the goop kept seizing up as I stirred... you can see the flecks of paint in the pic above. As it is Vin yelled as soon as I turned the light off anyway, so the glow in the dark bit might have been a bit wasted!

GLOW IN THE DARK GOOP

As it is, we didn't get as messy as I was anticipating - we managed to keep our slimey mixture mostly in the tub and it washed off hands really easily. I was expecting Vin's usual trick of stick his feet in it, but he didn't even suggest it, so I kept schtum on that one!

GLOW IN THE DARK GAK

So much fun to be had wallowing in some slime... if you're too scared to try it I say go for it. There's no mess so great it can't be cleaned afterall!
