Our Advent Calendar...

Since Vin was born I have become a bit obsessed with creating family traditions. We have special breakfasts on a Sunday and banners and balloons on birthdays and at Christmas we have an entire advent calendar dedicated to our family traditions.

We're not religious, so we focus more on family activities and crafts - we do have carol singing and doing something for charity as an acitivity, because I don't want the season to be given over to consumption and all that other stuff people confuse Christmas with

Every year we have done the same activities, but due to moving twice in two years I managed to lose both previous years calendars... hopefully we can keep this years for many Christmasses to come

I decided not to number them, partly to be realistic about what we can fit in on each day, also this year I know for example we are going to see the reindeers on the 18th because a garden centre nearby is having their Christmas Fayre that day

I have my eye on a beautiful fabric advent garland in a local shop that I could pop these little tokens into, I love the idea of making one myself, but maybe if I start crafting in the new year it'll be ready in time for next Christmas!

The hardest part of this was thinking of enough activities, and then once I got inspired narrowing down to just 24. If you don't want to overdo it maybe you could come up with four special family activities for each Advent Sunday. If you feel like it, leave me a note to share your family traditions below...

  1. I've just come across this post from Pinterest and I love it! Like you I adore family traditions (we started one last year whereby one gift each has to be handmade). I am going to attempt to make this advent calendar this year - I just love the family activity aspect rather than the gross over-comercialisation. Thanks for sharing :)
