feeding the birds

While we're learning about trees and harvest and all sorts of nature things, I thought it would be fun for the kiddos to make some bird feeders and hang them in the trees at the park...

We collected some pinecones when we were out walking and we raided the nature box for the rest. I covered them in lard (note to lifelong vegetarian, next time use peanut butter or shortening) and let the kiddos roll them in birdseed. After that I tied wool around to stalks and let them set in the fridge a little to harden the lard.

We were inspired by this post over at Chasing Cheerios to make these pipe-cleaner cheerio feeders too. I gave both kiddo a couple of pipecleaners with the pointed ends bent over and a bowl of Cheerios and (once they eaten enough of them) they set to work practising their fine-motor skills...

I bent them into shape and attached a twig branch-perch to one and off we set to find some hungry looking birds...

  1. I've never seen these done with cheerios. That's a great idea - thanks for sharing on Monday Madness.

  2. These are perfect - I will be pinning and adding to my round up of winter animal activities. I'm also very grateful I brought a box of cherrios and then discovered neither child liked them... so I have a box and no one will eat them
