Happy Diwali crafts

Happy Diwali Guys! I'll admit, I wouldn't have even known it was Diwali, if it wasn't for the fact that Cc's family celebrate. I vaguely remembered bits of the story from my schooldays and I found a great re-telling of the story online that I read to the kiddos today.

As Diwali is the Festival of Light I decided to make some candle holders with the kiddos. I used a salt-dough for the base and rolled it into balls. Then the little ones pushed a tea-light into the centre and decorated the dough with beads, gems and sequins (and googly eyes and Cheerios - not entirely traditional huh?)

The dough will air-dry after a couple of days and harden - but you might need to poke some of the bits and bobs in again as it dries. We put ours in the airing cupboard to speed up the drying process.

Cc and I made this card with some supplies from our Collage Centre for her grandparents. I had some sheets of metallic origami paper and cut out the shapes while Cc practised her sticking.

I'm so glad we got a chance to learn about something new, it makes me wonder what other holidays and festivals we can learn about... I'm thinking maybe a little thanksgiving celebration next month?

  1. Yet another fun thing you've done with dough. Great that you tied it in with another culture. Thanks for sharing.
